Special Programs

Special Needs

Text Box: At Glenelg School we are committed to supporting all students to reach their full potential.  Some students through learning disability require extra support to achieve success, happiness and inclusion. This support is most effective when families and teachers work in partnership.

Students that have had a comprehensive Learning Assessment or Social and Emotional Assessment with a Departmental Educational Psychologist (Guidance Officer) and/or Speech and Language Assessment with a Departmental Speech Pathologist are eligible for support. These students receive a Negotiated Education Plan (NEP) and have teacher time allocated with the Special Education Teacher (Some students through the assessment process may have already been verified at the pre-school level). The Special Education Teacher will; conduct an NEP meeting with the parent and appropriate staff members and work directly on the learning requirements as determined by the NEP and assessment recommendations. This may mean in class, small group and/or individual support for the student.

Funtastics

WHAT IS IT?
The program is a course of activities designed to assist the development of gross motor skills in Reception to Year 2 students.  It was written by the South Australian Physical Education Branch for students who need support with coordination. All reception students are pre-tested to determine if they would benefit joining the program long or short term.
BENEFITS
This fun and energetic program ensures that all students are skilled to participate and be successful in class based PE programs, schoolyard games and general junior sports.
Along with the obvious benefits to coordination, balance and strength the children are expected to improve in; concentration, understanding of spatial concepts, listening skills, self confidence and social skills.

HOW IT WORKS AT GLENELG
We conduct 2 x 20 minute sessions per week run by the special needs teacher  or a trained School Services Officer (SSO) assisted by either adult volunteer helpers or senior students from year  6 or 7. Funtastics provides the extra benefit of cross age peer tutoring and relationship building.

Japanese

Japanese is taught by specialist teachers' Natalie Reed and Sam Fowler. All classes in the school are involved in the program which includes learning some of the language and investigating the Japanese culture.
